When you consider the fact that Maddisen began writing this at the age of 11, and she’s totally homeschooled. I’m completely in awe. The conciseness of the general theme is incredible. Knowing she wrote the poems and memories of Mattheo are deep and as though she herself has experienced flashbacks. That’s really deep. As a child, I was severely abused, and I’ve had many flashbacks. It’s as though she herself has experienced them. Which she assures me she has not. So that tells me that our Heavenly Father is in this. That He has been leading her through the entire series. I had never read young adult fantasy. So it took a bit for me to understand what I was reading. But once I got it, I couldn’t put it down. I’d highly recommend her book and the sequels to follow.”

Maddisen Baybrook grew up in a small town in central Missouri and began writing stories at the age of ten. What started as daydreams soon became entire worlds on the page. She has spent years developing The Light of the Veil, guided by her faith and a deep love for character-driven storytelling. When she is not writing, she can usually be found with iced chai, working on the next book in the Chronicles of Alaris series.

1. What inspired you to write this book?

I have always felt incredibly different from everyone around me – my peers especially – and
several years ago, I had a very difficult time embracing this difference. In my desire not to
feel quite so alone in myself, I was inspired to write about painfully human characters, set in
a world where uniqueness is a strength.

2. What will your readers gain from your book?

I hope readers will gain a magical, emotional story that acts as a breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre.

3. What was your unique quotient for this project?

I think what makes my approach different is that I tried to build the world in a very Christ-
centered way, and only give information and lore as necessary to support the mysterious feel
of the world.

4. How did becoming an author help in your brand/business?

Being a teenager, I don’t necessarily have a brand or business, but I believe this book is the
foundation of one and will help propel me forward in life.

5. What are your future plans as an author?

I plan to continue my work on The Chronicles of Alaris until the series is complete, which
will not be for a while, and I plan to begin working on two other projects, both of which will
continue to explore the complexities of emotion and the relationships between God and men.

6. What will you learn from this book?

You will learn a foundational understanding of the world of Alaris, how God may be working
in the darkest parts of your life, and how complex human emotions and trauma can be.
