Norma Fay Nicholson, MA(Ed), BA, RN (Retired), is a healthcare leader and founder of Youth Empowerment Services. After 46 years in nursing, she focused on creating community-based support for incarcerated youth. An advocate for racial justice and mental
health awareness, she has authored five non-fiction books, including Young Lives on the Line. Through speaking, writing, and volunteer work, she continues to inspire collaboration and understanding to strengthen families and communities across Canada and internationally.

FAQ

1. What inspired you to write this book?

Though research and legislation offer alternatives to the incarceration of youth, education has
been ignored by institutions, aspects of society, and the media. As a healthcare leader, I have
witnessed and have also been traumatized by the inhumane treatment of Black and Minority
youth in custodial facilities. I wrote the book to provide lived experiences, factual
information, and present evidence that shares the harrowing experiences of Black and
Minority youth who are caught up in the justice system.

2. What will your readers gain from your book?

Learn that the youth justice system is not a system that supports young people to new
directions in their lives, but one in which they are broken, traumatized, and returned to the
community in worse conditions. The reader will also gain knowledge of how systemic racism
negatively impacts the way youth are misjudged. Because it is a thought-provoking book, it
will resonate with readers on why it is necessary to look at solutions to freeing youth from
criminality to have better outcomes for society.

3. What was your unique quotient for this project?

Society wants to feel safe, and the blame needs to shift from blaming to preventative actions.
The focus has been on the society’s welfare.

4. How did becoming an author help in your brand/business?

I have self-published five books prior to writing Uncaged. I hope that engaging and learning
from GBP in an effective way to develop and publish a book will help with my educational
outreach… which is my business.

5. What are your future plans as an author?

Develop and present Podcasts, YouTube videos, and enhance collaboration and partnership
with folks and organizations to support activities that will empower change. I see my book as
one of the many tools to be used to impact change. I would like to see the book become a
documentary and see more folks engage with all levels of government to impact change.

6. What will you learn from this book?

The readers would be able to answer the following thought-provoking questions:
1- Will lived experiences resonate with captive audiences to help facilitate change?
2- Will the solutions in the book empower folks to want to learn and act?
3- Will there be increased opportunities to become more involved in helping to free
youth from criminalization?
